Cante Jondo (2011)
solo cello (7’)

Cante Jondo takes its name from the Andalusian genre of Flamenco folk song, literally meaning 'deep song', which is characterised by a mournful intensity and the Moorish influence of Arabian scale patterns. While the piece shares these qualities, the opening section is in fact an extended paraphrase of viola material from Poznań, written earlier the same year.

Commissioned by the Cardiff Music Festival and first performed at Tabernacle by Steffan Morris on 16th September 2011.
